New Home Registrations up 14% in January

newhomeregistrationsLatest data from the National House-Building Council (NHBC) shows a 14% year-on-year increase in January for the number of new homes registered in the UK.

The year’s first statistics continue the upward trend seen throughout 2013, which resulted in the highest number of new home registrations since the economic downturn in 2007.

In total 11,489 new homes were registered in January, an increase on the 10,112 of January 2013.

Of these, 8,312 were private sector and 3,177 were public sector.

For the rolling quarter November 2013 to January 2014, the number of registrations was 31,482, a 26% increase on the same period a year before (24,999).

Of these, private sector registrations November-January were up 23% to 22,244. Public sector registrations were up 33% to 9,238.

NHBC commercial director Richard Tamayo said:

“Our figures show that the industry enjoyed a strong start to 2014 by maintaining the momentum from the previous year. Both private and public sectors reported growth on the same month in 2013 and we look forward to hopefully seeing this trend continue throughout the year to help meet the demand for new homes.”

Industry calls on government for boiler scrappage scheme

Martyn-BridgesWith a poor response to the government’s Green Deal, OFTEC has written to Secretary of State for Energy, Ed Davey, to propose the introduction of a boiler scrappage scheme to encourage more people to make the switch to high efficiency condensing boilers.

In his letter, OFTEC chairman Martyn Bridges calls on the government to recognise that there are millions of households still use aging, inefficient non-condensing boilers (both gas and oil fired), and says that a simple scrappage scheme would help money-strapped consumers upgrade and save up to around 20% on fuel costs while also reducing CO2 emissions.

The letter describes the Green Deal as having a very disappointing take up so far due to the complexity of the scheme, high interest rates and the difficulty in the installer being able to access the scheme. Last month DECC figures showed households applying for assessments under the scheme fell by 21%.

Instead, the letter praises the Northern Ireland Assembly which introduced a boiler scrappage scheme offering a £1,000 subsidy towards the purchase of a condensing boiler. This has resulted in more than 10,000 additional boilers being installed since April last year.

Martyn Bridges said:

Green Deal has failed to make the intended impact on reducing CO2 emissions due to low take up and regrettably we anticipate the government’s much publicised domestic RHI scheme may well suffer the same fate,

A simple boiler scrappage scheme, such as the one successfully running in Northern Ireland, would do so much more to encourage people to upgrade their boilers and take their first, manageable steps towards a more fuel efficient future.

Recently updated figures announced by the Energy Saving Trust on 3 February show that upgrading to a more efficient boiler will save significantly more on bills and CO2 than previously thought.

May Gurney helps Kier grow profits

kier-van-1Kier, whose financial year ends in June, has reported interim pre-tax profits for the six months to 31 December 2013 of £36.8m, which is 90% up on the £19.4m made in the same period the year before. Revenue reached £1,432m, up from £976m the year before.

As expected, an exceptional charge of £22.0m was incurred relating to the transaction costs and integration of May Gurney, which was acquired in July 2013.

Chief executive Paul Sheffield said that May Gurney was bedding in well, with no hidden surprises. “We are pleased with the performance of the May Gurney business which is operating in line with our expectations,” he said.

The acquisition has consolidated the group’s position in support services, providing a range of complementary services to clients in the highways, transport and utilities sectors. The integration remains on course, with good customer retention, new extended contracts and revenue synergies. We are on track to deliver the anticipated £5m cost savings in this financial year. The Construction and Property divisions continue to strengthen.

As previously reported, Paul Sheffield is stepping down as chief executive on 30 June, and is being succeeded by Haydn Mursell, the finance director.

Ideal Boiler’s Revamp Website

IdealBoilersMAINIdeal Boilers’ revamped website now offers installers a range of features to help with their working day.

Installers can now use various devices to book training, read specification sheets and installation manuals, plus access technical support.

The new Members’ Area offers a range of useful features from free Gas Safe notifications and easy warranty registrations to the ‘Marketing Toolbox’ where they can create various branded marketing collateral.

Also available is an online business profile that consumers can view on the ‘Find an Installer section’ of the Ideal website.

The Installer Connect loyalty scheme has also been upgraded, creating a business support tool for loyal installers.

Every time an installer buys an Ideal boiler they can earn points which can either be cashed in for rewards such as iPads and vouchers, or double up the points-value when they opt for the new Toolbox.

Carrie Young, Head of Marketing at Ideal Boilers, said:

Both new websites are designed and built to make our installers’ lives easier whether this is through the responsive design, online booking facility or through the Marketing Toolbox items.

The installer is at the heart of everything we do at Ideal Boilers and Installer Connect is more than your average loyalty scheme. We want to offer them more than just reliable products, and our new websites offer chances for them to build their businesses and make their lives easier.
