hssHSS saw its revenues reach £226m last year, up from £182m in 2012.

Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were up 36% to £55m (2012: £40m).

Growth was helped by acquisitions. In June 2013 HSS took over the powered access hire firm UK Platforms from the French platform manufacturer Haulotte. In October 2012 power solutions provider ABird became part of the HSS Hire Group.

On 31 March HSS acquired Scottish generator hire company Apex Generators.

At the newly added UK Platforms, division, HSS has begun a programme of fitting its boom lifts with Haulotte’s anti-entrapment technology.

HSS Hire Group chairman Alan Peterson said:

“2013 was a strong year for HSS. The team achieved strong organic growth across all our customer groups, product ranges, geographies and services; this was complemented by our strategy to acquire promising specialist businesses whilst also reinvesting in our future growth. We are confident that we will continue to enhance value by achieving our target of occupying number one or two positions in our key markets. At the same time, we will continue to monitor opportunities to add further growth and value through selective acquisitions.”

“I am pleased with the financial performance during 2013. Over the last 12 months we have continued to deliver on our targets and produce industry-leading return on assets. This strong performance is the result of our highly diversified customer base and focus on growth over the long-term – underpinned by a consistent strategy of optimising the network, driving operational efficiency, investing in people and systems and delivering added-value services.”

Parliamentary inquiry into carbon monoxide safety

gascoloursA call for evidence was issued by a new Parliamentary inquiry today (24 April) investigating ways to improve carbon monoxide (CO) safety across the UK.

The inquiry, entitled ‘Preventing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning 2: Bringing behavioural insights to poisoning prevention efforts’, is being conducted by the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG).

The inquiry builds upon APPCOG’s 2011 inquiry ‘Preventing Carbon Monoxide, which made recommendations for policy and other change, including improved detection, regulation and public awareness of the threat posed by the colourless, odourless gas.

The new inquiry will gather evidence and assess what progress has been made by government and industry in enacting those recommendations.

The inquiry will also identify a core set of behaviours that must change in order to enhance efforts to reduce CO poisoning. In doing so, the inquiry will draw from emerging experience/evidence from behavioural-insight led approaches in the domestic gas industry, as well as in different policy domains.

The public consultation is open until 16 May, with the public encouraged to submit written evidence via the APPCOG website to help support later stages of the inquiry.

APPCOG co-chair Barry Sheerman MP said:

“It’s obviously important to raise public awareness of the dangers of CO in order to reduce the number of poisonings. But we should also recognise that the ultimate goal of awareness-raising activities is to effect significant changes in behaviour and reduce incidents of poisoning.

“Information alone may not be sufficient in bringing about the behaviour changes needed to prevent unnecessary deaths and injuries from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is why we’re excited by what a behavioural-insights led approach will bring to the new APPCOG inquiry and efforts to reduce poisonings.”

Inquiry co-chair Dr. Rachel McCloy added:

“Insights from behavioural sciences have made strong contributions in other areas of public policy, not least in the areas of personal finance and public services. This inquiry will bring that expertise to bear on policy surrounding carbon monoxide safety. We are confident the insights we uncover will help us develop clear recommendations that, if acted upon by government and industry, will help save lives and prevent injuries from the tragedy of carbon monoxide poisoning.”

The inquiry will publish its final report in Autumn 2014, in which it will make further recommendations for policy change, laying out clear roles and responsibilities for government and industry in promoting safe CO-related behaviours amongst the UK population.

Specflue opens up a new depot

specflueSpecflue, supplier of renewable heat products and flue systems, is to open a new northern depot in West Yorkshire.

The building in Castleford will provide 20,000 square feet of warehouse space, a trade counter and ample customer parking.

The new facility has created 12 new jobs and allows Specflue to offer businesses in northern England and Scotland an improved service that equals what is already being enjoyed by its customers in the south. Through its fleet of service vehicles, it will provide a next day service between the north Midlands and the Scottish border. There are also plans to have a further base in Livingston, West Lothian, that can service most of mainland Scotland.

Since last August, Richard Tindall has been analysing the requirement and planning possible solutions, as well as project managing the implementation of this important strategic step in the company’s growth.

“This is just the start of Specflue’s presence in the north

“Over the coming months, we are intending to increase our number of service vehicles significantly. When fully rolled out, over 90% of Specflue’s customers will have access to next day deliveries via the dedicated van service. And, with all vehicles being fully equipped with tail-lifts, they are capable of delivering pretty much our full product range of renewable heating supplies.”

Nigel Kitching has been appointed as depot manager, joining the business with 25 years of warehousing and distribution experience.

Quooker taps into success across Europe

QuookerPic_20140415-093803_1According to Quooker, in excess of 300,000 of its boiling water taps have now been installed in Europe’s kitchens.

Quooker MD Stephen Johnson (seen here), whose UK operation claims to have already sold over 50,000 Quooker taps in less than six years, said:

“Seeing the 300,000 milestone across Europe has been very rewarding, especially as a sixth of that has come from the UK alone.

“When we began, we knew we needed to educate the kitchen buying population that a Quooker tap was a better investment than a kettle.  Now we hear from so many of our kitchen dealer partners that in less than a decade the Quooker has become the ‘must have’ item for new kitchens.  We are also frequently told that it soon becomes the most frequently used appliance in every kitchen, bar none.”

Quooker is celebrating the landmark sales achievement by offering designer Quooker aprons to the best ten comments of congratulations via its social media streams on Facebook and Twitter.

The company says that over a quarter of a million of its Basic, Design, Modern and Classic dedicated boiling water taps had already been purchased by kitchen owners across Europe before Quooker launched its new Nordic series, which includes the Twintaps, the Fusion and the dedicated Nordic boiling water tap , eighteen months ago. These latest additions to the range, which come in a choice of Nordic Square or Nordic Round designs in polished or chrome finishes, have proved extremely popular says Quooker and already account for over a third of its taps sold each year in the UK.

Last year Quooker also added a soap dispenser to complement the Nordic series and a Scale Control Filter, which can be installed at the time of purchase or retrofitted to any existing Quooker installation; to give the Quooker added protection and longer life in hard water areas.
