Gas Safe Heroes

gassafeFor Gas Safety Week 2014, Gas Safe Register is looking for ‘Gas Safe Heroes’ – engineers who are passionate about gas safety and have helped to keep an individual, family or community gas safe.

Russell Kramer, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, said:

“One of the things we want to do this Gas Safety Week is shine a light on the good work of registered engineers. That’s why we’re looking to collect stories from engineers about how they’ve helped keep homes, families and communities safe.

“If you have a story about how you’ve gone ‘above and beyond’ – whether it’s helping to evacuate a home before a serious gas incident, putting right dodgy gas work that could have led to carbon monoxide poisoning or a gas explosion, or held neighbourhood events to raise awareness about gas safety issues – then we want to hear from you.”

Engineers can share their story with Gas Safe Register by visiting: www.gassaferegister.co.uk/hero – in doing so they can become a Gas Safe Hero.  Heroes’ stories may appear on the Gas Safety Week website and could also be shared with the media.

Gas Safe Register is also looking for Gas Safe Heroes to join the Register in talking to the media about their experiences of unsafe gas work and help spread gas safety advice. Engineers who are interested in standing alongside the Register and speaking to the media can nominate themselves to be a spokesperson once they have shared their story.

Last year, 2,700 industry supporters pledged and got involved – distributing leaflets, holding promotions and telling customers about the week either face-to-face or over social media.

Russell adds:

“Gas Safety Week is about bringing gas safety to the forefront of people’s minds.  So this year, I’m urging the nation’s engineers to join in – tell us your story, nominate yourself to be a spokesperson or pledge your support. It’s only through the whole industry uniting that we can hope to reach the 23 million UK gas consumers – encouraging them to always use registered engineers, to get appliances checked regularly and to sign up to the free annual gas safety check reminder service at: www.staygassafe.co.uk.”

Dornbracht joins May Design Series

DornbrachtpicDornbracht is the latest major player to join the Kitchen + Bathroom district at May Design Series, which takes place at London’s ExCeL next month.

The family run German business will be bringing a selection of its most innovative and forward thinking designs to the show, and plans to spotlight some of its most recent products in front of an audience of UK and international buyers.

Among the designs on show will be the newly refined MEM series, comprising taps, basins and shower fittings. Whilst the MEM collection has proved extremely popular since it was launched in 2003, the collection on display at May Design Series will be available in the new Cyprum finish, a rose-gold hue designed to celebrate the growing copper colour trend in bathroom interiors.

The finish is produced from 18-carat gold and copper, giving it a high shine finish. The form of the MEM range has also been subtly refined, allowing for a number of new combination possibilities in terms of outlet points and control elements, which can be taken from other Dornbracht collections.

Also on display will be Dornbracht’s Foot Bath, a scenario-adaptable unit for foot bathing. The unit has two pre-programmed settings that seek to deliver a luxurious experience: RELAX, which gradually raises the water level and temperature, and VITALISE, designed to enliven the reflex zones with four water jets, and simulate circulation with alternating temperatures. Foot Bath is ideal for those looking to add a touch of opulence to the bathroom space.

Dornbracht will be displaying products from Alape, part of the Dornbracht group, on its stand in the Kitchen + Bathroom district. One collection on show will be a range of sit-on, built-in and freestanding basins made from the manufacturer’s signature 3mm glassed steel. The basins are adaptable in dimension and configuration, making them ideal for commercial spas, hotels and interiors.

Alape will also be showcasing its Asystem Init modular system, which allows the integration of selected built-in, under mount, sit-on and dish basins in a range of different furniture elements.

Mark Booth, sales and marketing director at Dornbracht UK, said:

“In recent years, London has seen an explosion of design energy and whenever we exhibit in this creative city we are well received, as people are intrigued by Dornbracht Group’s technological innovations. We look forward to showcasing Dornbracht’s refined MEM bathroom fitting series and new exquisite copper finish ‘Cyprum’, as well as purist furniture solutions for the bathroom by Alape at May Design Series.”

Conservatives: Pledge to end onshore wind farm subsidies

davidcameronPrime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative party pledged to end government subsidies for onshore wind farms if it wins a national election next year, increasing uncertainty for investors in renewable energy, Reuters has reported.

Michael Fallon, a Conservative energy minister, said that onshore wind still had a role to play in helping Britain meet its energy needs and renewable energy targets but that the industry no longer required government subsidies.

“We now have enough bill payer-funded onshore wind in the pipeline to meet our renewable energy commitments, and there’s no requirement for any more,” Fallon says, in comments released by his office.

“That’s why the next Conservative government will end any additional bill payer subsidy for onshore wind and give local councils the decisive say on any new wind farms.”

Onshore wind farms currently in the planning system will still benefit from subsidies, he added, but any further projects will no longer receive support.

Onshore wind farm projects will also be subject to tighter local planning rules under the Conservative Party’s plans.

The government’s renewable subsidy regime has always foreseen an end to direct support once technologies are able to compete commercially. The government pushed through cuts to onshore wind subsidies late last year but boosted support for offshore wind.

The future of onshore wind has divided the government. Cameron’s junior coalition partner, the Liberal Democrats, are keen to encourage investment in all forms of renewable energy.

Mira volunteers brighten up Sam’s House

mira

12 volunteers from Mira Showers recently worked with local artist Mike Kingston to brighten up Sam’s House, the purpose-built home for children undergoing bone marrow and stem cell transplants at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Using donated painting materials and equipment, the team took just a day to refresh the rooms with striking images under Mike’s direction. The 16-bedroom home is run by Mira’s nominated charity, CLIC Sargent, the cancer charity for children and young people.
