House building output continues to rise

housebuildinggrowth

Latest numbers from the National House-Building Council (NHBC) show sustained growth in the industry for the first quarter of 2014.

In total, 33,816 new homes were registered in the UK during Q1 2014, which is a 7% increase on the 31,739 for the corresponding period a year ago.

Of these private sector registrations increased by 3%, reaching 24,414, compared with 23,608 in Q1 2013.

Public sector registrations in Q1 2014 were up by 16% year-on-year from 8,131 to 9,402.

Following a record 2013, with the highest new house building volumes in London for a generation, Q1 2014 London registrations also grew 6% year-on-year.

NHBC has also identified how other major UK cities are performing compared to the capital. Outside of London, the figures show that Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol are the top three cities with the highest number of new home registrations, broken down below.

  • Greater London  7,693
  • Birmingham  3,406
  • Manchester  2,625
  • Bristol  1,570
  • Newcastle  1,496
  • Liverpool  1,494
  • Sheffield  1,169
  • Leeds  990
  • Nottingham  700
  • Glasgow  618
  • Bradford  560

As the leading warranty and insurance provider for new homes in the UK, NHBC’s registration statistics are an indicator of how busy the house-builders are.

Commenting on the latest statistics NHBC chief executive Mike Quinton said:

“Our new figures show further sustained growth and consolidation in the UK house building industry following a strong year last year. Over the past 15 months we have seen a genuine return of confidence to the industry as builders strive to meet the growing demand for new homes that the country clearly needs.

“London continues to be the major driver for growth in house-building. But our figures also show that other UK cities outside the capital are also showing some encouraging signs of growth.

“However, we have been clear that this growth is from a historically low base. The UK still has a chronic shortage of new homes so we must not get complacent in our continued attempts to meet the growing housing needs of the population.”

It is named Connect, and is a new online platform designed to provide installers which a dedicated system to get in touch with each other, share information, or ask questions.

The website is designed to make life easier for installers, and has been developed to provide the user with a free social media platform allowing plumbers to share many things such as tips, hints, recommendations for products, and also share images and video content (perfect for product reviewing and installation tutorials). If you are a Connect member, you will be the first to gain access to the promotional offers and discounts on Bristan’s shower and tap ranges. The Connect social media community will give installers news and information regarding new products, how-to-videos and many plumbing industry news, as well as direct access to the Bristan product experts.

Connect has been produced following the results of Bristan’s largest industry survey, which was done at the beginning of this year, the results have shown that installers felt that there were little opportunities, online, for them to share things like information which can help each other and help them in their line of work.

Fiona Bowyer, head of marketing at Bristan, said:

“As a brand, Bristan continues to develop ways to make life easier for installers. The Connect platform is another method by which we are trying to do this. By launching Connect, we hope to offer installers a place to share their experiences and tips with other plumbers and in time become the number one resource for all plumbers throughout the UK.

“We plan to continue to develop the Connect platform over the next few years to offer a host of new features designed to provide further benefits to those members that regularly use the network.”

Green Deal Home Improvement Fund announce further incentives

greendeal (1)Households carrying out energy efficiency improvements on their home can now get more money back to offset the cost of having the work done.

From June, people in England and Wales will be able to get up to £7,600 back through a new Green Deal Home Improvement Fund so they can take control of their bills and have warmer, greener homes.

The scheme helps people to install energy efficiency measures such as solid wall insulation and new heating systems by providing them with money back on the contributions they make towards improvements.

It opens up the market for smaller businesses in the energy efficiency sector, competing in new and innovative ways and providing further opportunities for jobs and growth.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Ed Davey, said:

“The best way for households to take control of their energy bills is to use less energy.

“Faulty boilers, draughty windows and insufficient insulation all cause properties to leak hundreds of pounds every year. But advice and support through the Green Deal can help put a stop to this.

“By installing energy saving improvements, families across the country can enjoy the benefits of warmer, more energy efficient homes and lower bills.”

The average annual bill saving from installing major measures such as solid wall insulation in a three-bed semi-detached house is £270, while savings from other measures such as upgrading a boiler can knock around £100 off a customer’s bill.

Under the new incentive scheme, which is available from June, domestic energy customers can get:

  • up to £1,000 for installing two measures from an approved list; and/or
  • up to £6,000 for installing solid wall insulation; and
  • up to £100 refunded for their Green Deal Assessment.

The scheme also entitles those who have brought a property in the 12 months prior to application to qualify for up to an additional £500 if they carry out energy efficiency improvements.

In December the government announced a £540 million three year energy efficiency package to make Britain’s homes and public buildings more energy efficient.

Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker, said:

“The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund is another way the Government is making it simpler and cheaper for people to stay warm and improve their homes.

“I want households across the country to benefit from more energy efficient homes and reduced bills through the Green Deal, and that is what the new home incentive fund will do.”

The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund also applies to private or social landlords, who can benefit if they undertake to improve the property and are paying the costs themselves.

Measures eligible under GDHIF:

  • Condensing gas boiler (on mains gas)
  • Double glazing (replacing single glazing)
  • Secondary Glazing
  • Replacement Doors
  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Floor insulation
  • Flat roof insulation
  • Room-in-roof insulation
  • Replacement warm air unit
  • Replacement storage heaters
  • Flue gas heat recovery units
