Pink Plumbing: Getting women into the plumbing industry

philippacunningham

Manufacturer, Ideal Boilers and Pink Plumbing (Derby-based), have joined together to develop a specialised local training academy, specifically for women in the plumbing and heating industry.

Founder of Pink Plumbing, Philippa Cunningham, founded her female-only plumbing company in 2008, following a successful 20-year career as a teacher, and has now set her sights on improving access to training for women who wish to pursue a career in plumbing.

Philippa said:

“I’m aiming high – I want to change the face of the construction industry! I want to make it so that women can enter the industry more easily and know that there will be a strong support network in place for them. I want to help women build their careers, build their own businesses.”

As part of this long-term ambition, Philippa is currently establishing her own training academy in Derby with the support of Ideal Boilers.

Philippa added:

“The support I’m already receiving from the industry is fantastic. Ideal has been alongside me from the start of this project, helping with funding for the building, supplying boilers for the trainees to work on and providing invaluable support, advice and encouragement.”

Carrie Young, Ideal’s head of marketing, said:

“It’s great to see Philippa’s passion and to work alongside someone who has such ambition to encourage more women into our industry.

“We’re proud of our role in raising standards in training and assessment within the industry and pleased to support Philippa as she works towards this in Derby. We encourage other manufacturers, suppliers, merchants and plumbers to get behind this fantastic project as well. The industry must pull together to ensure the long-term career prospects of high quality female would-be plumbing and heating engineers.”

Worcester rewards environmental excellence with Environment 2020 Awards

worcesterrewardsLast month we witnessed Worcester, Bosch Group host its annual Environmental 2020 Awards, where the manufacturer acknowledged those who have made an impressive commitment to tackling climate change through the use of high-efficiency heating technologies.

Now in its 14th year, the Environment 2020 Awards continues to highlight best practice from those installers who actively make strides to conserve the environment and enhance the environmental credentials of domestic properties. This year saw installers and three specifiers from across the country rewarded for their work to improving the UK’s carbon emissions at a ceremony held at Worcester, Bosch Group Headquarters in Worcester.

With well over 100 installers and specifiers having submitted entries for this year’s awards, along with plenty of entries for the children’s art and photography competition, Worcester judges faced the task of selecting the overall winner for each of the ten categories.

The winners of each category, who received their prize from the event’s special guest, Mike Foster, chef executive, Energy and Utilities Alliance, (EUA) are detailed below:

  • Greenstar gas-fired boiler installation: Darran Grant – Darran Grant Plumbing and Heating, Cardiff
  • Greenstar oil-fired boiler installation: Mike Sellwood –  M Sellwood Plumbing and Heating, Swindon
  • Greenskies solar water heating installation: Richard Smith – Smiths Heating Services, High Wycombe
  • Greenstore and Greensource heat pump installation: Richard Hows – Keogh & Hows, Stratford Upon Avon
  • Total system solution installation: Steve Lockyear – South West Plumbing and Heating, Bath
  • Greenspring instantaneous water heater installation: Darren Miles – D Miles Plumbing and Heating, Broadway
  • Housing Association specification: Golden Gates Housing Trust, Warrington
  • Housebuilder Specification: Rectory Homes, Haddenam
  • Local Authority Specification: Weaver Vale Housing Trust, Norwich

Worcester’s Environment 2020 Awards, which were first launched in 1999, also reward the artistic efforts of young people up to the age of 16, who have created outstanding artwork inspired by energy efficiency and climate change.

Six year old Advaidah Menon, from Newcastle, ten year old Kyan Hoque from London and twelve year old Emily Loraine from Kent were each presented with £500 of shopping and leisure vouchers for their efforts.

Carl Arntzen, Worcester’s managing director, said:

“All of the winners are fully deserving of the awards. Every year the calibre of entries is improving and this year was no exception, in fact it was one of the hardest judging processes to date. Every entry has been extremely innovative and well considered, providing a bespoke solution to meet the homeowner or tenant requirements.
“By hosting our Environment 2020 Awards annually we hope to demonstrate a shared passion for energy efficiency and highlight those installations which have made a commitment to protecting the planet. The artwork category allows us the chance to see how the younger generations regard the environment through their inspirational and thought provoking pieces of art.
“Our Environment 2020 Awards have been a huge success since we introduced them back in 1999 and we are already looking forward to seeing more examples of excellent installation and specification work when we begin judging entries next year.”

David Cameron told to ‘back British solar industry’ by over 150 businesses

backsolarindustryOver 150 businesses coming mainly from the solar industry, have came together to warn David Cameron of the threat to Britain’s solar industry.

A letter to Downing Street from a wide coalition of both big and small businesses, including household names, such as IKEA, has asked the Prime Minister to back the UK solar industry. Signatories include Triodos Bank, Ecotricity, KYOCERA, Interface, Good Energy and the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology at Loughborough University.

The letter was signed by a host of small businesses involved in solar, showing how the industry is made up of over 2,000 small and medium sized businesses who support 16,000 jobs – in stark contrast to the Big Six utilities.

The letter comes on the day the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) closes its consultation on proposed changes to support for solar power. The proposals are already having a damaging effect on parts of the solar industry.

The letter highlights the critical importance of commercial and industrial roofs, as well as solar farms, in delivering low-cost solar. It urges the Prime Minister to secure the UK industry with an eye on the £78 billion per annum global solar market anticipated in 2020. The signatories underline the very positive benefits that solar parity will deliver for UK businesses including improving international competitiveness, lower energy price inflation and improved electricity sector competition.

Despite the vision set out in DECC’s own Solar PV Strategy of solar booming across large roofs, the Solar Trade Association (STA), who organised the letter, say that the current policy framework is not enabling this to happen. The STA also argues that the DECC consultation which closes today on Feed-In Tariffs (FITs), a support scheme essential to the success of roof-top schemes, doesn’t address the policy failure on mid-large solar roofs.

STA chief executive, Paul Barwell, said:

“Solar is a home-grown solution to Britain’s energy crisis. If the government provides a stable policy environment solar will soon be subsidy free. But the government is now proposing to tilt the playing field against large-scale solar, while not taking sufficient action to unlock commercial rooftop solar – that is unacceptable.

“We urge DECC not to close the Renewables Obligation to large-scale solar and to rethink proposals on FITs to allow a meaningful rooftop market which its own Solar PV Strategy recognises has such tremendous potential.

“The level of policy uncertainty risks derailing the extraordinary progress the large-scale industry has made in delivering jobs and reducing technology costs in the last few years. It is also putting the UK’s position in the booming global solar market at risk.

“So serious are the implications of these consultations for the British solar industry that we are asking the Prime Minister to intervene. We only need one more push, one more period of policy stability to be able to compete with fossil fuels without support. That is the global race the PM needs to win for the UK economy and the climate.”

backsolarindustry2

The two DECC consultations focus on controlling spending for large-scale PV within the Renewables Obligation and ‘promoting the deployment of midscale building-mounted solar PV’ under the FIT.

However, the STA says that DECC’s claims that large-scale solar is a threat to the Renewables Obligation budget are ill-founded given solar currently accounts for just five per cent of Renewables Obligation expenditure. The National Audit Office has recently criticised DECC for awarding 58% of the entire 2020 renewables budget to just seven projects (six of which are more expensive than solar power).

In addition, DECC’s proposals to ‘promote’ the deployment of rooftop solar under FITs are wide off the mark on the essential changes necessary to enable the take-off of roof-top solar. The STA is urging DECC to produce a new consultation that properly addresses the barriers to roof-top solar deployment.

The letter was due to be handed over to Downing Street at noon on Monday July 7.

Duravit achieve record growth

duravitThe Duravit Group topped 380 million Euros in sales for the first time in 2013 which, after adjustments for exchange rates, represented an increase in sales by 4.1%, compared with the previous year.

The company achieved a profit growth after tax and generated an increase in the operative cash flow. Ceramic production grew by 4.3% and the factories in Egypt, India, China and Tunisia showed a similar development. Balance sheet ratios have again improved, and the equity ratio in the Group is now 47.7%.

Frank Richter, CEO of Duravit AG said:

“In 2013, Duravit again experienced growth in important markets and thus reported a very good operating result”

The new products launched in 2013 were extremely well received says the company. The DuraStyle complete bathroom series is becoming an international bestseller, and the Happy D.2 series with its high design credentials also far exceeded expectations, claims Duravit. The range of new products was rounded off by the re-launch of the X-Large universal bathroom furniture series, as well as by a number of toilets with rimless flushing technology.

The UK, along with China, the USA, Tunisia and Turkey were amongst the largest growth regions within the Duravit Group. With 35 affiliated companies and a presence in more than 120 countries, the total international share of turnover was about 81%. Duravit continued to grow in South America with a new sales company in São Paulo/Brazil. In Asia, and in China in particular, Duravit continued to maintain profitable growth.

Duravit made its largest investment within Germany at its Meissen location. Amongst other things, it pressed ahead with the conversion of the Duravit Technology Center (DTC) that opened in March 2014. The DTC is currently the most modern of the company’s twelve training and presentation centres and will strengthen the Meissen location on a sustained basis.
