Industries come together against carbon monoxide

coOver 200 people joined together at the London’s Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre (9th July), to come together in the fight against deadly carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Dubbed the ‘silent killer’, CO is colourless, odourless, and can kill in minutes. This is why, for the first time ever, the UK’s ‘big four’ gas networks have come together to join The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) to tackle CO.

Following on from last year’s Ignorance Can Be Fatal conference, this year’s event will once again bring together as many industries as possible with a vested interest in combustion, fuels and consumer safety. These include the leisure industry, landlords, the emergency services and even travel associations.

The All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) has thrown its support behind the event, with co-chairs Barry Sheerman MP, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, Jason McCartney MP and Baroness Maddock all expected to attend.

Energy UK, Gas Safe Register and the Carbon Monoxide All Fuels Action Forum will also join campaigners, charities and the victims of CO tragedies to address the issues surrounding this deadly hazard found in our homes and businesses.

Sponsored by Northern Gas Networks, Scotia Gas Networks, Wales & West Utilities and National Grid, the event has three key pillars:

  • Research – how we can learn more about the effects of CO
  • Education and behaviour change – how do we get the public to understand the dangers of CO and change their behaviour
  • Technology – what advances could transform the safety of everyone?

Daval continues successful growth

daval-continues-growthDaval Furniture says it has enjoyed a fantastic first half of the year with sales up by 15% on the previous year.

Daval showcased at its first trade exhibition earlier this year where it won the distinguished ‘Innovation Award’ for its Como Bedroom and signed up seven new retailers, all of whom are taking on Daval kitchens and bedrooms to feature in their showrooms.

With the economy showing exciting signs of improvement, says Daval, the retailers were looking for a product with added value that helps them stand out against their competitors. New stockists include Purely Simply Lovely based in Lancaster, and Imbue in High Wycombe..

Daval also launched its new handleless kitchen ‘Spa Fields’, named after its Huddersfield address, as well as a new painting department.

Daval says its success and demand from retailers around the country is being driven by its new and innovative products such as Bramham, a painted in-frame kitchen, and its award winning and stylish Como bedroom range. And to respond to the increased growth the company recently employed five new warehouse operatives in its Slaithwaite factory.

Simon Bodsworth, marketing and development manager at Daval (seen here), said:

“Many UK manufacturers have experienced tough times throughout a number of recessions, however it is becoming more apparent that the economy is changing and Daval has experienced positive growth, especially in 2014 so far.

“We recently launched seven new kitchens which have created a buzz amongst our stockists, and we’re looking forward to launching our dedicated Daval showroom at our Slaithwaite based Head Office this summer.”

Scottish solar industry at risk

alexbruceEighty four per cent of Scottish adults would be happy or unconcerned about living close to a solar farm, according to an exclusive new opinion poll published today.

The poll results suggest widespread public acceptance for a technology that could make an important contribution towards meeting ambitious Scottish government targets for generating electricity from renewable sources.

Commissioned by Scottish communications consultancy, Orbit Communications, the new poll comes as the solar industry faces huge uncertainty following recently announced plans by the UK government to slash incentives for the development of large scale solar farms.

The announcement is particularly bad timing for Scotland since solar developers have only very recently begun to take an interest in the potential for large-scale solar development north of the border. As technology improves and suitable sites further south become more and more difficult to find, an increasing number of solar companies were beginning to see potential for future industry growth in Scotland.

The poll found that 34% of Scots would be happy to live near a solar farm with 50% having no strong opinion and only ten per cent would be unhappy doing so.

The poll results follow the recent publication of an action plan for development of the solar industry in Scotland, prepared on behalf of the Scottish Institute for Solar Energy Research and the Scottish Solar Energy Group. The document highlights the huge potential for expansion of solar energy generation capacity in Scotland and calls for key stakeholders to work together to develop a vision for the industry’s future.

Orbit Communications director, Alex Bruce, said:

“This new poll demonstrates a very broad base of public acceptance for the development of solar farms in Scotland with 84% of Scots supporting or having no strong feelings about living near a solar farm.
“Through the recent publication of an action plan, industry experts have already demonstrated the huge potential for future development of the solar industry in Scotland and the major contribution this could make towards cutting carbon emissions and energy costs and meeting the very ambitious renewables targets previously set by the Scottish government.
“Large scale development offers the greatest potential to make a significant contribution to meeting these goals. If a change in government policy stifles a popular technology before it’s really had a chance to get off the ground, that would be a huge opportunity lost.”

How To Make A Strong And Firm Statement With Black-Framed Windows And Doors

White frames seem to be really popular these days with both windows and doors, both for the indoors and the outdoors. But seems to me that white is not exactly the best color. Wouldn’t you say black is a much better fit? It’s simple, elegant and great for creating contrasts. Just take a look at these examples and you’ll understand what we mean.

black1

The sleek black frames on these floor-to-ceiling glass walls are the perfect choice for this modern living room. The frames contrast with the light-colored walls and they actually also perfectly complement the rest of the interior design too.

black2

Yes, it’s true that straight-forward color such as black are most often used for creating contrasts but, in the case of the window frames, for example, it would look just as elegant when complemented by brick walls and other dark colors.

black3

Black-framed windows are a particularly great option if you’re going for an industrial-style interior design. The strong and neutral color will look great when combined with exposed brick walls, pallet furniture and unfinished ceilings.

black4

Black frames, whether for doors or for windows, are also a particularly wonderful option in the case of contemporary interior designs. This bedroom, for example, features a very clean and simple décor and the folding doors are the most wonderful accent feature.

black5

It’s best to match the frames of the windows and doors, especially when the two are in such close proximity to each other such as in this case. An eclectic design based on strong contrasts and combinations of modern and traditional details.

black6

What better color for a minimalist interior design than black? Combine it with white for a clean and elegant look. It;s why the black-framed windows and the white walls, ceiling and floor are a perfect match.

black7

Thanks to the versatility of the color, this type of window frames are a very nice choice for any type of interior, regardless of the style. This farmhouse kitchen, for example, looks very inviting and the black-framed windows are the element that brings together the whole décor.

black8

Choose black if you want to add harmony to an interior design dominated by simple colors such as these shades of gray. It’s a way to break the monotony with strong yet subtle contrasts.

black9

This Mediterranean living room is yet another example that shows just how versatile black-framed windows and doors are in comparison with other types. You simply can’t go wrong with black.

black10

A very elegant but also very inviting dining room with a chic farmhouse-style interior design. Notice how black is used to frame the whole décor and how the stone wall creates the transition from black to white.

black11

A home office could definitely use a strong and firm décor. It’s why dark-stained furniture makes such a great choice for this space and why black-framed windows are one of the best options. It’s best to keep it simple and, most often, that means using simple and basic colors such as black and white.

Mark David aims to make Ballerina Kitchens the specialists’ flexible friend

markdavidballerinakitchen

Mark David have been appointed agents for Ballerina Kitchens covering an area stretching from north of the Thames up the East Coast of the UK. Churchman meanwhile will continue to look after business for the brand in the UK south of the Thames.

Mark Evans of Mark David said:

“Ballerina is keen to expand its business in the UK,

“and Churchman approached us to see if we could work with them and Ballerina covering a large section of the UK. Having visited the Ballerina factory and had the opportunity to study the range in more detail I am convinced that this is a great product for the independent kitchen specialist in the UK and it is capable of giving them the flexibility they need.”

Ballerina has a number of features that will appeal to the more experienced kitchen designer. These include a drawer box system from Grass with a variable width, 24 colour carcases as standard, 1800 RAL lacquer colours available for a very small premium, four base unit heights and a choice of 450 doors across seven ranges.

“One of the Ballerina features that stood out for me was its ability to produce digitally printed laminate to provide a similar service as book matching veneers,” said Mark Evans. “This means that on an island unit for example, the design on the doors, drawers and side panels can follow all around the island. There was a striking example of this in the Ballerina showroom at its headquarters in Rodinghausen and it will be one of the first of the new displays I’ll be putting in my showroom.

“I waiting until after the Ballerina hausmesse in September to finalise the new plans for the showroom and to update the Mark David website with the latest images but if there are retailers that would like to speak to me about the opportunities that Ballerina can bring to their business that can contact me via the website now.”
