DuPont Corian Curves

Corian-curvesThis open plan kitchen with curved dining area is from the Charles Yorke Rio Valencia range.

The project designers, Charles Yorke retailer Jones Britain, chose DuPont™ Corian supplied by CD UK for its thermoforming capabilities particularly for the island unit where the worktop opens out into a curved seating area.

Corian is also used for the worktop run that spans the whole length of the room, it is joined inconspicuously so it appears like one long piece.

The simplicity of the design and clutter free layout enhances the visual appeal of the furniture by allowing the colours and woods used to take centre stage.

Features include a bulkhead with a ceiling extractor and perimeter lighting, which echoes the shape of the island. A pop up TV with Corian lid has also been designed into the island near to the banquette seating area.

The Corian used was Glacier White, designed and installed by retailers; Jones Britain. Charles Yorke built the furniture and the Corian fabricators were Interfab.

EPEE F-gas pledge hopes to be catalyst for global action

EPEEFollowing the UN Climate Summit, the European Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE) issued a pledge in which the European refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump industry commits to taking concrete, proactive action to facilitate the implementation of the EU F-gas Regulation.

EPEE director general, Andrea Voigt, said:

“EPEE members are determined to make the EU’s new F-gas rules work and are ready to help the EU and its Member States reach their targets and ensure that Europe remains a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The commitments focus on two main areas: education, in terms of raising awareness and promoting the rules, and supporting a smooth and viable transition towards lower emission technologies.

EPEE’s education commitments include organising regular and tailored events to raise awareness of the new rules, developing specific communication tools to enhance industry’s understanding of its new obligations, and increasing co-operation with installers, owners, and schools to ensure all parts of the chain understand their responsibilities.

It will also set up a Low Emissions Task Force to examine how to overcome barriers, which prevent the uptake of low emissions technologies, as well as monitor the effectiveness of the EU F-gas Regulation and raise global awareness.

Andrea said:

“EPEE supports the new EU rules and is calling for global action to tackle and reduce HFC consumption in a way that is economically viable, compatible with high safety standards, and has energy efficiency at its heart.

“We believe our pledge has the dual purpose of acting as a catalyst for action at the global level and ensuring that the EU F-gas Regulation is properly implemented and monitored.”

Bosch to buy out Siemens

Bosch-to-buy-out-Siemens-picThe rumour that has being doing the rounds of the German trade press regarding ownership of the BSH Group (Bosch Siemens Home Appliances) has finally been confirmed with an announcement published in the Elektro Journal that Bosch is to buy the 50 percent share of the group owned by Siemens for a reported €3.0 bil.

The deal, which needs to be approved by the relevant anti-trust authorities, is expected to be completed by the first half of 2015. Bosch will retain the right to use the Siemens brand name on household appliances.

Bosch Siemens Home Appliances was formed as a 50-50 partnership in 1967 and in addition to these two brands the group is responsible for the distribution of the Neff and Gaggenau brands in the UK and a further 10 brands including Constructa, Thermador and Balay in other trading areas throughout the world.

The Bosch Group, which is also one of the largest auto parts suppliers in the world is said to want to focus more and more on networked appliances such as washing machines or refrigerators that are technically able to communicate with the Internet and can be controlled via smartphones, reports the Elektro Journal.

With Bosch retaining the right to sell Siemens-branded appliances, it would seem that it is business as usual as far as kitchen appliances in the UK are concerned, certainly in the immediate future.

BAM lodges plans for £100m Glasgow office development

BAMBAM Properties and Taylor Clark Properties have unveiled plans for a £100m development in Glasgow.

A planning application has been lodged with Glasgow City Council for a 300,000 square foot office scheme in Atlantic Square, making it one of the city’s largest office developments.

The proposed development will comprise two commercial buildings, with one of 10 storeys (180,000 sq ft) and one of six storeys (80,000 sq ft). Both will have ground floor retail space. A third building will comprise retail and residential accommodation.

If approved, it will be built by BAM Construction.

BAM Properties development director Michael Smart said:

“This is a strategic alliance between Taylor Clark, which owns the site, and BAM as a developer and contractor with a substantial track record in bringing attractive sustainable developments to the market.”

He added:

“This project builds on our positive experience at our CONNECT110NS development in Queen Street.  We have carefully researched the supply pipeline and have identified a strong undercurrent of demand from top grade companies and organisations. Together, we will create a state-of-the art development that will meet the requirements of forward thinking business tenants and investors.”

The new development has been designed by architectsCooper Cromar and will include the retained façade of the listed warehouse buildings on the site that were built in the early 20th century.

Work on the development will start as soon as the necessary planning consents have been secured, BAM said.

Winners of the 2014 KBSA Awards

KSBAThe KBSA has announced the winners of its 2014 KBSA Designer Awards, an annual competition for members of the trade association.

Diane Berry of Diane Berry Kitchens, last year’s winner of kitchen designer category, successfully defended her title by winning the award again this year. The judges said of Diane’s winning entry:

“A kitchen is very challenging as there are so many elements to be considered – and Diane’s winning design stands head and shoulders above the others”.

The winner of the bathroom category was Barry Lavin, Director of Denby Kitchen Company. The judges said: of Barry’s winning entry:

“It displayed beautiful workmanship and a brilliant interpretation of the client’s brief and further, the bathroom would be a real pleasure to use.”

The winner of the kitchen concept category was Karen MacArthur from Kitchens International in Edinburgh, seen here receiving her award from Richard Turner the CEO of ArtiCad (left) and David Dalglish the national chair of the KBSA. The judges commented that Karen’s was an excellent design they rated highly, and noted the mirror splashbacks as an unusual feature. Using a mix of mid and tall units was not intimidating, but allowed Karen the opportunity to express her design skills to the full.

The Kitchen Concept Award is the first of its kind in the KBSA’s awards, says the Association, as all entrants create their design from a common brief which allows the judges to judge from a level playing field. This award is open to all KBSA designers.
